The Deepings is the collective name given to the towns of Market Deeping and Deeping St James and the two outlying villages of West Deeping and Deeping Gate all bordering the banks of the River Welland as it meanders between Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire.

The area known as The Deepings has a long history of habitation going back to prehistoric times. The land is low lying and in the distant past it was frequently covered by the sea as waters rose and receded with each ice age. Through this land flows the River Welland which in ancient times was a tributary of the Rhine when Britain was physically joined to the continent of Europe.

A SPECTACULAR showcase of farming and countryside pursuits drew thousands to Market Deeping at the weekend.

Organisers of the Deeping Agricultural Show and Country Fair were delighted the rain held off until late on Sunday after last year’s washout kept crowds away.

Everything from vintage tractors to a grand parade of sheep kept visitors entertained throughout the weekend, with a host of activities for youngsters as well.

The traditional agricultural show raises thousands of pounds for various charities and this year it is supporting the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, Fenland Riding and St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice.

Publicity co-ordinator Pauline Redshaw said: “The 65th Deeping Show enjoyed broad sunshine on Saturday and Sunday morning. There was a good attendance with plenty for visitors to see and do.

“There were some very good entry in the cattle classes, and showing classes for horses and riding classes were very well-supported.

“The show committee is grateful for people that prepared the animals and brought them to the show. “There was an excellent display of vintage tractors, cars and engines and an array of interesting stalls around the ring and shopping mall.

“Unfortunately, after an excellent morning on Sunday, there were isolated storms in the afternoon, but the show was a success and the committee is already looking forward to next year.

“The local schools were represented, with the Deeping School’s model railway club taking part and displays from William Hildyard and Market Deeping Community Primary schools.”

The show will also give a rousing welcome to town criers from across the world, including Canada and New Zealand.

There was a Battle of Britain memorial flypast on the Sunday afternoon.
